The digital revolution of orthodontic treatment in the growing patient
Invisalign® is an orthodontic technique born in 1997 in California from an “idea” of two MBA students from Stanford University who thought of using the CT system and stereolithography in 3D to produce customized aligners and of little visible material, capable to carry out orthodontic movements to move the teeth. Thus began the digital revolution involving orthodontic treatment both in the diagnosis phase thanks to the introduction in a short time of the clincheck® software and in the treatment phase thanks to the smartrack® material used to produce the aligners.
The treatment consists of a series of removable transparent aligners that the patient must wear progressively for about 22 hours a day, changing them every 7 – 15 days depending on the protocols used, until the end of the treatment.
The digital era of orthodontics began with protocols for adult patient treatments and only in recent years have we had the opportunity, thanks to increasingly efficient software, to treat growing patients. Now we can treat teenagers in permanent dentition, children in mixed dentition and in growing staging.
INVISALIGN® PATIENT’S JOURNEY
The digital workflow in the orthodontic treatment
Invisalign treatment involves a totally digitalized orthodontic process in all its phases, starting from the child’s orthodontics with “Invisalign First” to get to treatment in the adult patient.
Impressions with the 5d digital scanner, the pre-visualization of the result thanks to the scanner and the possibility to perform the diagnosis with the ClinCheck software by the specialist takes place entirely digitally.
The follow-up of the change of aligners with the artificial intelligence-based Dental Monitoring software or the possibility of speeding up the treatment with photobiomodulation (Orthopulse) provide the opportunity to be treated completely in a digital path.
There is also the possibility, with Digital Smile Design (DSD), to obtain a realistic pre-visualization of the patient’s future smile, in combined orthodontic and prosthetic treatments (venerees)
Thanks to the combination of these techniques in a Digital Workflow, the treatment path turns into a better, faster, unique and above all pleasant experience for the patient.
Taking impressions – Itero 5 d
In 2015 Align Technology took a significant step forward in the field of orthodontic innovation by introducing its new proprietary intraoral scanning system: Itero Element.
With the scanner, the management of the impression is extremely faster, reducing by even three times the time required compared to traditional systems. All of this is of considerable benefit to communication with the patient.
Thanks to OutcomeSimulator we have the possibility to pre-show and share the simulation of the final result with the patient. Another option, which is extremely innovative, is the evaluation of the progress of the Invisalign treatment through the scanner.
The ability to monitor the progress of therapy extremely precisely and constantly is decisive for achieving the final result. The precision with which the scanner photographs the progress of the treatment (characteristic of digital technology) and the periodicity with which this evaluation can be repeated (thanks to the ease of use of the scanner and the drastic reduction of the time required to implement it) represent the new opportunity and innovation of the treatment.
Speeding up the Treatment – Orthopulse
OrthoPulse® is a device that uses low intensity light energy to stimulate the bone surrounding the roots of the teeth, facilitating their movement.
The light energy used in the frequencies called nIR (near Infra Red) stimulates the cell’s metabolism by creating and increasing its chemical energy.
This energy is then used by the body to actively regenerate and reshape the surrounding bone. This results in a significant reduction in the total treatment time. OrthoPulse is simple to use (10 minutes a day), completely safe and painless.
Monitoring of Treatment – Dental Monitoring
Dental Monitoring is a software based on an artificial intelligence system that allows monitoring of orthodontic treatment remotely. In this way, the Orthodontist can follow the treatment more accurately by reducing the number of check-ups to those really necessary while remaining constantly informed on the progress of the therapy.
The use of the Dental Monitoring system is very simple since it is based on an intuitive application that will be installed on your smartphone.
Through this application, the patient will be actively involved in the monitoring phase, periodically making a video of his mouth which will be analyzed by the aforementioned software and will provide the Doctor with very accurate evaluation parameters of the dental movement and the general condition of the patient’s mouth.

Digital Smile Design – DSD
In recent years we have witnessed the digital evolution both in diagnosis and in the
therapeutic approach in all specialties of Dentistry, but above all we have understood the
importance of the interdisciplinarity of the various specialties for the purpose of an excellent
aesthetic and functional result. The possibility of using technology in prosthesis and
orthodontics also consists in being able to pre-visualize the final result to the patient. Thus
was born the DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN protocol, whose author is Dr. Christian Coachman. The
protocol is based on the digital design of the smile or on the analysis of the relationships
between the teeth and the gum and soft tissues and their correct three-dimensional
positioning in space in order to obtain the most harmonious and natural aesthetic and
functional result possible with the consequent virtual planning of therapy, be it orthodontic or
prosthetic or as often orthodontic-prosthetic is desirable together. The protocol provides that
the patient after a careful diagnosis that includes a functional aesthetic analysis of the smile
and function can pre-visualize the final result digitally (through the aid of photo videos and
three-dimensional scans of the arches and face) but can also wear a mock-up (made on the

Prevention and treatment in pathologies in growing patients and Invisalign First
Pediatric Dentistry is the dentistry specialization focuses on the prevention and therapy of diseases of the oral cavity in growing patients (0-14).
